The short answer
Confirm the exact XLG unit’s IP67 rating, voltage, output mode and mounting instructions. Choose a location with suitable heat dissipation and service access, protect every external connection for its exposure, and test the whole sign under full load. IP67 is a defined enclosure rating; the sign, its joints and any connected IP68 modules each have separate protection requirements.
Survey the actual outdoor exposure
Assess wind-driven rain, roof runoff, pooled water, condensation, cleaning methods, sunshine and the likelihood of physical damage. Mark an accessible mounting point that complies with the driver’s own orientation and clearance instructions. An outdoor fascia can be hotter internally than ambient air, while a cold cavity can collect moisture even without direct rain.
The IP67 marking describes dust-tight enclosure protection and a defined temporary immersion test. It is not a claim of continuous underwater operation or of resistance to every high-pressure jet. If the sign will be jet washed, confirm the exact product’s jet rating and instructions separately.
Check the exact model and output
A 12V channel-letter module needs a suitable 12V output; a 24V strip needs 24V. Some Glowfy XLG pages offer both voltage variants, while the current 75W and 320W listings reviewed are 12V. Confirm the delivered label and datasheet before making connections. Check the full connected watts, maximum current, thermal derating and any dimming or adjustment instructions.
If the unit is a MEAN WELL XLG model, use the manufacturer’s exact suffix and series datasheet, not a generic claim about all XLG units. The label and product documentation should settle any ambiguity in output mode, IP rating and approvals.
Mount for cooling and future replacement
Follow the driver maker’s stated orientation, minimum spacing and maximum case temperature. A sealed metal body still releases heat to its surroundings; burying it in insulation or trapping it behind a hot panel can raise temperature and trigger derating or shorten service life. Do not invent a universal clearance dimension for the full range.
Avoid locations where water pools around a cable exit. Route cables to reduce water tracking into a junction and provide suitable strain relief. Do not drill or modify a sealed enclosure unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Plan access so a failed unit can be identified and replaced without destroying the sign face.
The weakest link is often the cable joint
The driver’s IP67 enclosure does not confer IP67 on a cut cable, connector, dimmer or distribution box. Each exposed joint needs an appropriate enclosure or connection system installed exactly as specified for that exposure. A cable loop and gland arrangement may help direct water away, but do not replace the manufacturer’s instructions with a generic trick.
Separate mains and low-voltage wiring as required by the applicable design. Size low-voltage cables for branch current and voltage drop, and provide any circuit protection required by the installation. Mains connections, isolation and testing should be handled by a competent person.
- Inspect cable sheaths, glands and strain relief before energising.
- Keep polarity and circuit labels clear at every low-voltage distribution point.
- Check the current rating of connectors and any dimming controller.
- Do not assume the outputs of two supplies can be paralleled.
Commission at full brightness
Run the whole sign at maximum intended load for an observation period appropriate to the project. Measure output voltage at the driver and the furthest LED branch under load. Inspect the illuminated face for unevenness, flicker and supply shadows, especially in shallow letters. Check the driver case temperature using the method and limit in its exact datasheet.
Record supply model and serial or batch information, variant voltage, module count, branch diagram, calculated load and photographs of protected joins. Leave the documentation where a future technician can find it. Recheck after any controller or dimmer changes.
Diagnose problems before changing the supply
A dark sign may result from mains isolation, driver protection, a disconnected branch or an LED fault. Distant modules that are dim point toward voltage drop or a weak joint even if the driver has spare watts. Water staining near a junction is not proof that the sealed driver failed. Inspect safely, measure under load and replace only the component that fails the test.
At planned maintenance, look for blocked ventilation, corrosion, cracked joints, damaged cable sheaths and mounting movement. Keep water away from live electrical work. A qualified person should make any mains-side repair.
IP68 modules and IP67 supplies can coexist
Glowfy K2 PRO and K8 PRO modules are listed IP68, while its XLG supplies are currently described IP67. A system can contain components with different IP ratings because each is installed in a different position. The complete sign’s protection is not automatically the highest rating of any one component. Specify each unit, joint and enclosure according to actual exposure.
Do not advertise XLG as IP68 unless the exact model documentation confirms it. A higher rating should never be invented to make a marketing comparison; professional buyers need the rating on the delivered unit.
Frequently asked questions
Can an IP67 XLG be installed outside?
Potentially, when the exact manufacturer permits the location and the mounting, joints, temperature and full installation are designed for the real exposure.
Does an IP68 LED module require an IP68 driver?
No. Each component needs protection appropriate to its own position; a current Glowfy XLG driver is listed IP67.
Is IP67 the same as pressure-wash proof?
No. Confirm the exact model’s protection against jets and the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions separately.
Can a sealed driver overheat?
Yes. A sealed enclosure still has temperature and mounting limits. Check derating and measured case temperature.
