The short answer
For a rear-lit light box, choose modules that fit the cabinet and produce the required appearance through the actual face. Test GL 8018 where there is room for its larger housing and GL 6018 where a smaller footprint helps near obstructions. Set spacing from a representative sample, then calculate total watts, design 12V branches and test the complete cabinet under load.
1. Identify how the light box is built
Measure the distance from the proposed module mounting plane to the inside of the face, rather than quoting the overall cabinet depth. A recessed backing, fixing rail or folded return can substantially reduce that distance. Note braces, hinges, cable routes and the space needed for a replaceable power supply. Anything between the LEDs and the face can create a visible shadow.
A rear-lit box has light sources spread behind the face. An edge-lit panel directs light into a suitable light-guide material from its edges and is a different optical system. A wide-beam face-lighting module is not automatically a substitute for a directed edge-lighting product. Double-sided cabinets also need their own test: a successful single-face layout does not establish performance on two faces.
2. Test the face and artwork together
Use the final acrylic or diffuser, printed film and graphics in the sample. A plain white panel may transmit light differently from a dense logo or a dark printed background. Inspect large pale areas for patches, thin text for legibility and saturated colours for their appearance when illuminated. Agree the intended look with the customer before ordering the full module quantity.
Keep the backing clean and use the intended internal finish. Reflective surfaces can influence how light reaches edges, but they cannot rescue an unsuitable layout by assumption. Compare samples at a consistent supply voltage and viewing distance. Fix camera exposure and white balance when recording alternatives; automatic camera settings can make unequal layouts appear similar.
3. Where GL 8018 and GL 6018 fit
The practical difference begins with placement. GL 8018 PRIME has an 80 × 18mm housing, while GL 6018 PRIME has a 60 × 18mm housing. The longer unit is a candidate for open areas of the backing; the shorter one can give more options beside braces or in constrained cabinet sections. Confirm the current variant and installation documentation before purchase.
Both current listings specify 12V DC and a 160° beam. GL 8018 is listed at 1.5W per module and GL 6018 at 1W. These numbers support electrical planning; they do not establish how many units a particular face needs. A higher-output module can still give a poor result if its position leaves dark borders. Choose the tested arrangement rather than simply the lowest module count.
| Cabinet feature | Layout consideration |
|---|---|
| Broad unobstructed backing | Compare a GL 8018 layout against the target face appearance |
| Braces or limited mounting space | Test whether GL 6018 allows better placement |
| Visible perimeter fall-off | Review edge positions and actual face distance |
| Very shallow or edge-lit construction | Check the optical system before choosing either model |
4. Establish rows and spacing with a sample
Build a representative cabinet section containing a centre area, one edge and a corner. Start with any manufacturer layout guidance, position modules provisionally and fit the actual face. Inspect from straight ahead and oblique angles in both ambient light and darker conditions. Look for bright dots, dark bands and shadows around internal structures.
Change one variable at a time: row position, distance between modules or distance to the face. Record each arrangement before adjusting it. Repeat the chosen pattern across the full cabinet, then inspect the complete face because a small sample cannot reproduce every brace or cable shadow. Do not treat the 160° figure as a universal pitch or minimum-depth instruction.
5. Turn the approved layout into a power plan
Suppose the approved sample leads to 48 GL 8018 modules and 24 GL 6018 modules. The nominal connected load is (48 × 1.5W) + (24 × 1W) = 96W. At 12V, nominal total current is 96 ÷ 12 = 8A. These counts are an arithmetic example, not a spacing recommendation for a particular cabinet.
If you choose an 80% loading target, 96 ÷ 0.8 gives 120W of supply capacity before checking temperature derating and other loads. That margin is a design choice, not a rule for every driver. Use a compatible 12V constant-voltage supply and follow its continuous-load limits. Split feeds into appropriate branches, checking cable, terminal, connector and permitted module-chain ratings. A supply with spare watts does not prevent voltage drop.
6. Commission a cabinet that can be maintained
Before closing the box, check mounting security, polarity, strain relief and protected connections. The published IP65 module rating does not establish the rating of field joints, cable entries or the cabinet. Assess rain, cleaning water and condensation at the actual location, and keep the supply within its mounting and temperature requirements. A competent installer should handle mains-side work.
Run the complete sign at its intended output, measure voltage at the supply and distant modules, and check the face again after assembly. Keep an accessible service route to the supply and distribution points. Record the module variant, branch counts, cable routes and approved photographs so future repairs can reproduce the original appearance.
- Approve the final face material and illuminated artwork.
- Record tested depth, row positions and module count.
- Check full-load current and far-end operating voltage.
- Photograph wiring and keep the supply documentation.
- Inspect corners, edges and obstructions after final assembly.
Frequently asked questions
Can GL 8018 and GL 6018 be used in one light box?
A suitable 12V design may use both after checking colour consistency, appearance, combined load and the current product wiring instructions.
Is one module per fixed area a reliable rule?
No. Face transmission, depth, artwork and obstructions affect the required layout. Use an actual-face sample.
Can I use these modules for an edge-lit acrylic sign?
Do not assume so. Edge lighting requires optics and a light-guide construction suited to that purpose.
Why are the edges darker than the centre?
Check perimeter module positions, internal shadows, backing finish and face distance. Confirm voltage before deciding the fault is optical.
