GL 8018 vs GL 6018 LED Modules: Which Fits Your Sign?

Both PRIME modules are 12V, IP65 and listed with a 160° wide beam, yet they solve different placement problems. GL 8018 offers more light per module in an 80mm housing; GL 6018 fits more easily into tight shapes with a 60mm housing. The right answer is the layout that lights the actual face evenly at a sensible total installed cost.

The short answer

Consider GL 8018 for broader, standard-depth strokes when its 80 × 18mm body fits and the sample needs its 145lm output. Consider GL 6018 for tighter letter geometry where a 60 × 18mm body improves placement. Neither wins automatically: compare a representative sample at the same face, depth, supply voltage and viewing conditions, then calculate the complete module count and load.

Specification comparison at a glance

These are the figures shown on the current Glowfy product pages for the warm-white versions. Verify the selected variant and current datasheet before ordering. Published lumens are module figures; a finished sign has losses and may require a different layout.

What the difference means in a real letter

GL 8018 provides about 61% more published lumens per unit than GL 6018 (145 versus 90), while drawing 50% more power per unit (1.5W versus 1W). Its nominal lumen-per-watt ratio is about 97 versus 90. These ratios are not a guarantee of fewer modules or lower total sign energy: module placement and face uniformity decide how many units a particular sign needs.

A wider 80mm body can simplify a layout across a broad letter stroke, but may be impossible to position neatly near a small counter or sharp bend. A 60mm body gives more freedom there. Because both quote 160°, the beam-angle number alone does not explain a difference in distribution quality; examine the full sample behind the intended face.

Two worked comparisons without a false module-count promise

Suppose a broad test letter looks even with 40 GL 8018 modules. Its nominal load is 40 × 1.5 = 60W, or 5A at 12V. If a different layout requires 60 GL 6018 modules, that also totals 60W and 5A. The result is an illustration, not a recommended count: face brightness, spacing, labour and cost must be assessed in the sample.

Now suppose a small curved letter physically accepts 20 GL 6018 modules but not the GL 8018 housing at the necessary positions. The 6018 layout is 20W nominal. A theoretical lumen total from a larger unit is irrelevant if it cannot be placed to light the face evenly. Conversely, an 8018 layout may need fewer units on a large panel. Record the actual design rather than extrapolating from catalogue lumens.

A repeatable selection method

Begin with a drawing of the narrowest stroke and the broadest area. Check housing clearance and permissible fixing positions. Build two samples at identical return depth using the same acrylic, internal finish and 12V supply. Keep camera exposure and white balance fixed, but judge the real face with your eyes at normal viewing distance.

For each option, record module count, pitch, full-load watts, measured far-end voltage, hotspots, edge fall-off, material cost, installation time and access for repair. Use the model that satisfies the required appearance and practical constraints; where one model cannot fit, a mixed design might be possible after matching colour and checking branch loads.

  • Check warm-white or cool-white variant consistently across the same visible sign.
  • Check mounting-hole positions, wiring routes and connector protection.
  • Compare total installed cost and serviceability, not pack price alone.
  • Ask for current photometric and installation data if the sign specification is demanding.

12V wiring and power supply choices

Both modules are listed for 12V DC. Calculate total load as (number of GL 8018 × 1.5W) + (number of GL 6018 × 1W). Divide by 12V for nominal current, then check the actual driver’s permissible load and temperature derating. For example, 30 units of each total 45W + 30W = 75W, about 6.25A at 12V. An 80% planning target suggests at least 93.75W rated capacity, subject to the chosen driver’s data.

Supply branch cables, connectors and distribution points must be rated for the current they carry. Avoid an excessively long daisy chain; follow the module maker’s permitted chain length. Measure operating voltage at the last module under full load. Do not join the outputs of separate power supplies unless the manufacturer expressly permits it.

IP65, colour and long-term maintenance

Both module housings are listed IP65, but the complete installation is only as protected as its joints, cable entries and driver location. IP65 does not mean continuous submersion resistance. Choose protection for the actual exposure and follow installation instructions. The current Glowfy warranty page lists these PRIME models under a three-year warranty; review its terms.

A replacement can differ in perceived colour even when its nominal Kelvin rating matches. Keep the variant and batch details in the job record, and consider how to access modules and supplies after installation. A well-documented sample and wiring plan make later service much simpler.

Practical decision summary

Choose by the geometry first, then validate the light. GL 6018 is a sensible candidate when compact placement is the limiting factor. GL 8018 is a sensible candidate when the sign has room for the larger housing and benefits from more output per module. Both can work in face-lit signage when the test piece confirms uniformity. Neither is described as a Philips-chip or 170° product in the current listings.

Frequently asked questions

Which is brighter per module?

Glowfy publishes 145lm for GL 8018 and 90lm for GL 6018. Finished face brightness also depends on count, optics, depth and acrylic.

Will GL 8018 always need fewer modules?

No. Its larger body may limit positions in a tight letter, and a uniform layout matters more than nominal lumens per unit.

Can the two models be mixed?

A mixed 12V design may be possible after checking colour variant, appearance, module layout, combined load and the manufacturer’s wiring limits.

Do they have a 170° beam or Philips chips?

Current product pages list both at 160° and identify SMD 2835 without a Philips brand claim.
