The short answer
Glowfy lists GL 8018 PRIME at 12V DC, 1.5W and 145lm per module, with a 160° beam, SMD 2835 LEDs, an 80 × 18mm body and IP65 enclosure. Use it where its body fits the letter and a sample demonstrates suitable face brightness and uniformity. Match it to a 12V constant-voltage supply and design the entire circuit for the calculated current.
Understand the published GL 8018 specification
The current Glowfy product page describes the warm-white version as 3000K. Confirm the selected variant and current datasheet before ordering: colour temperature, output and availability can differ by variant. The stated 145lm at 1.5W gives a nominal module ratio of about 97lm/W; it does not measure the efficiency of a finished sign after losses through acrylic or other materials.
The 160° optic describes wide distribution. It can help neighbouring light patterns overlap, but it cannot by itself guarantee a uniform face or establish a maximum spacing. The 80 × 18mm housing offers a long footprint, which may suit broad strokes while limiting placement in very narrow or sharply curved letters.

Where the GL 8018 is a useful candidate
Start with standard-depth face-lit letters, internally illuminated cabinets and fascia panels where the module has enough room and the 160° distribution can be tested behind the actual face. It is a candidate, not a universal recommendation for every depth. The colour of the internal returns, the face acrylic and the mounting position can all alter the final effect.
For very narrow strokes, a smaller housing such as the GL 6018 may offer more placement flexibility. For halo-lit or edge-directed effects, a purpose-designed directional optic may be more appropriate than a wide face-lighting module. Match the light distribution to the construction before comparing nominal lumens.
Build a representative sample before setting module pitch
Make a test piece at the real letter depth using the intended face, return finish and backing. Include the widest stroke, a narrow stroke, an inside corner and an edge. Start from any spacing guidance supplied with the module, then adjust position and pitch while viewing the face at its normal customer distance.
Look for bright points above individual modules, dark gaps between them, weak edges and shadows from wiring or a power supply. Photograph at fixed exposure and white balance so that two layouts can be compared fairly. Record the final pitch, depth, module count and face material; do not copy a spacing value from an unrelated sign.
- Measure voltage under full load at the first and farthest module.
- Test in ambient light as well as at night; a photograph alone can hide unevenness.
- Secure modules according to the actual mounting surface and manufacturer instructions.
- Leave access for future inspection and replacement.
Calculate connected load and supply capacity
Multiply the module count by 1.5W. For 60 modules, the nominal load is 90W and current at 12V is approximately 7.5A. A practical 80% loading target suggests at least 112.5W of rated capacity, so a suitable 120W or higher model could be considered, subject to its datasheet, temperature derating and circuit design. The 80% target is not a universal driver requirement.
Split larger signs into appropriate parallel branches rather than assuming every module can be daisy-chained. Check any stated maximum per chain, cable cross-section, joint and terminal ratings. A supply with spare watts does not correct voltage drop at the end of a long cable. Mains-side work belongs with a competent installer.
IP65 and the complete outdoor installation
IP65 refers to dust-tight protection and resistance to water jets under defined test conditions. It is not a promise that cut wires, connectors, cable entries, mounting holes or the sign as a whole are waterproof. Follow the product instructions and protect every connection to suit its installed exposure, including rain, condensation and cleaning.
Keep the power supply in a position and enclosure suited to its own rating, ventilation needs and service access. A module’s IP rating cannot be transferred to the supply. Inspect seals and cable routing before closing the sign, then run a full-load test and document the circuit.
Troubleshooting a GL 8018 installation
If the last modules are dimmer, compare measured voltage at the supply, branch start and end under load. If isolated letters are dark, inspect the branch joint and polarity before replacing the central supply. If the face has hotspots, revise module pitch, face distance and return reflectance using the same sample conditions. Flicker may point to a loose connection, overload, driver protection or an incompatible dimmer.
Keep a small record of installed module batch, variant, driver model, number of branches and test photographs. This makes later maintenance and colour-matched replacement easier.
Frequently asked questions
Is GL 8018 a Philips-chip module?
The current GL 8018 product page states SMD 2835, without a Philips chip brand claim. Do not assume the component brand from the 2835 package number.
Is 160° wide enough to avoid hotspots?
It may improve overlap, but uniformity depends on depth, pitch, face and return finish. Test a representative letter.
How much power do 100 GL 8018 modules use?
Nominally 150W at 12V, or about 12.5A in total. Select a compatible supply and branches after checking the exact model’s continuous and thermal limits.
Can IP65 modules be used in outdoor signs?
Potentially, when every module and connection is installed according to its instructions and the complete sign is designed for the actual exposure.
