What is an IP rating?
IP stands for Ingress Protection. It is an internationally recognised classification system defined by the IEC 60529 standard (adopted in the UK as BS EN 60529) that describes how well an electrical enclosure or component resists the intrusion of solid particles and liquids.
The IP rating is not a marketing claim or a manufacturer's assurance — it is a result of standardised laboratory tests that simulate real-world exposure conditions. When you see IP68 printed on an LED module datasheet, it means the module has been physically tested to a defined protocol and passed.
For professionals specifying LED modules for outdoor signage, understanding IP ratings is not optional. A module that fails due to moisture ingress will fail mid-contract, require expensive site visits, and damage client relationships. Getting the IP rating right at specification stage costs nothing. Getting it wrong is expensive.
How IP codes work
An IP code always consists of the letters “IP” followed by two digits. Each digit communicates something different:

Reading IP68: The first digit (6) means dust-tight — zero particle ingress. The second digit (8) means the component withstands continuous immersion at a depth and duration specified by the manufacturer, beyond the IP67 standard of 1 metre for 30 minutes.
IP65 explained
IP65 provides complete dust protection (digit 6) and resistance to low-pressure water jets from any direction (digit 5). The test involves a 6.3 mm nozzle delivering water at 12.5 litres per minute from a distance of 2.5–3 metres for at least 15 minutes.
In practice, IP65 handles light rain, washing-down with a hose, and general outdoor splash exposure. It is adequate for covered outdoor fixtures — under a canopy or soffit — where there is no direct rain exposure and no risk of pooling water.
For open-faced outdoor signage in the UK's wet climate, IP65 is insufficient. Driving rain at an angle, water pooling in sign cavities, and the repeated wet–dry–freeze cycle of British winters will cause moisture ingress through IP65-rated seals over a period of 12–24 months.
IP67 explained
IP67 provides complete dust protection and withstands temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre depth for 30 minutes. The test is a controlled immersion under defined pressure — not a jet or splash test.
IP67 is a significant step up from IP65 for outdoor signage. A module rated IP67 will survive direct rain exposure, pooling inside sign cavities, and most condensation scenarios. For sheltered outdoor signs — recessed into a building facade with some overhang protection — IP67 is acceptable.
However, IP67 is tested for a one-time immersion of 30 minutes. It does not account for repeated immersion cycles, sustained moisture exposure over years, or submersion beyond 1 metre. For outdoor channel letters exposed to the full UK weather cycle across a five-year warranty period, IP67 is borderline.
IP68 explained
IP68 provides complete dust protection and continuous submersion resistance at a depth and duration specified by the manufacturer — always exceeding the IP67 threshold of 1 metre for 30 minutes. The actual depth and duration are stated on the product datasheet and must be verified when comparing products.
For LED modules, IP68 means the internal PCB, solder joints, and LED chips are fully encapsulated against moisture. This is achieved through silicone potting, conformal coating, or sealed epoxy overmoulding. The result is a module that can be continuously exposed to moisture, condensation, and submersion without PCB corrosion or electrical failure.
IP68 is the professional standard for all channel letter LED modules — whether the sign is indoors or outdoors. The reason is condensation: even internal signs experience temperature cycling that deposits moisture inside letter cavities over time. An IP68 module is immune to this failure mode. A lower-rated module is not.
Beyond signage, IP68 is specified for modules used in water features, outdoor ground lighting, and any installation where sustained moisture contact is inevitable. In these environments, IP65 and IP67 are not substitutes.

Correct IP rating by signage application
Different sign types have different exposure profiles. The table below maps common signage applications to their minimum and recommended IP ratings.

Why lower-rated modules fail in practice
The IEC 60529 test for IP65 and IP67 is performed once, under laboratory conditions, on a new unit. It does not simulate the cumulative effect of years of real-world exposure. In practice, several mechanisms cause lower-rated modules to fail in outdoor signage applications — often within the first two years of installation.
Thermal cycling breaks seals
Every day, a sign heats up in the sun and cools overnight. Over hundreds of cycles, the expansion and contraction of materials with different thermal coefficients — aluminium housing, PCB, silicone seal, acrylic face — causes micro-cracking in IP65 seals. Water finds these cracks during the next rain event.
Condensation forms inside cavities
When warm, humid air inside a letter cavity cools overnight, moisture condenses on the coldest surface — typically the back of the acrylic face and the PCB of any unsealed module. IP65 modules have no defence against condensation that forms inside the cavity itself, rather than outside it.
Driving rain exceeds the IP65 test
The IP65 test uses a 6.3 mm nozzle at 12.5 l/min from 2.5–3 metres distance. UK storms regularly produce wind-driven rain that exceeds this pressure across the full face of an outdoor sign. IP65 seals saturate under sustained, directional driving rain within hours.
Pooling water in sign cavities
Water that enters via small gaps in the sign body — around the acrylic face, cable entry points, or aluminium joins — can pool in the lowest point of the letter cavity. A pooled volume of water creates sustained submersion that is beyond the IP65 and IP67 test parameters.
The practical conclusion: The price difference between an IP65 and an IP68 module is small. The cost of replacing failed modules across a sign installation — labour, access equipment, client management, warranty claims — is very large. IP68 is the correct commercial decision for every outdoor installation.
