The short answer
Start with a site-specific exposure assessment. Choose an LED module whose documented IP protection, voltage, output, optics and operating limits suit the sign, then design the complete installation so cable joints, cut ends, power supplies, drainage and access receive suitable protection too. For an unfamiliar letter depth or face material, prove the illumination with a representative sample before production.
1. Define the UK weather exposure at the actual sign
The Met Office describes substantial regional variation in UK rainfall and weather. Western and upland areas are generally wetter, while coastal and elevated sites can add wind exposure. A national product label cannot replace an assessment of the building elevation, sign orientation and local water routes.
Record whether the sign sits beneath a canopy, on an exposed fascia, close to a coast, below a leaking parapet or where washing water can be directed at it. Look for runoff from ledges, water tracking along cables, condensation inside closed returns and locations where drainage can become blocked. Include temperature, direct sun and access for future inspection.
Classify the position of each component separately. Modules inside a drained letter, a joint at the cable entry and a power supply in a service box may experience different conditions even though they belong to one sign.
- Photograph the elevation, cable route, sign returns and proposed power-supply position.
- Note rain direction, runoff, cleaning methods, condensation and any pooling risk.
- Record whether the installation is sheltered, indirectly exposed or directly exposed.
- Escalate uncertain electrical or building-envelope conditions to competent specialists.
2. Use the IP rating correctly
IEC 60529 classifies the degrees of protection provided by an electrical enclosure. In an IP code, the first numeral concerns access and solid objects; the second concerns water under defined tests. IP65 and IP68 are not marketing synonyms for “weatherproof”, and the precise IP68 conditions must be stated by the manufacturer.
An IP-rated module does not transfer its rating to field-made joints, cable entries, the sign body or the driver. A module can survive its declared test while an unprotected connector corrodes or a cable carries water into a lower part of the letter. Check the complete product documentation and installation method rather than selecting on the largest number.
If a supplier describes a module as IP68, confirm the exact variant and request its current datasheet or supporting documentation. Do not assume immersion performance means unrestricted use in permanently wet or chemically aggressive locations.
| Item | What to verify | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| LED module | Exact IP code, operating temperature and installation instructions | Treating the family name as the specification |
| Module-to-module wiring | Factory cable condition and maximum chain/feed limits | Pulling or bending wires at the module body |
| Field connections | Connector or enclosure protection and approved assembly method | Leaving an ordinary terminal inside a damp return |
| Power supply | Voltage, capacity, IP rating, orientation and derating | Assuming an IP68 module makes an indoor driver suitable |
| Sign enclosure | Drainage, cable entries, materials and service access | Trying to make an untested sign “IP68” with sealant |
3. Match module output and optics to the sign
Outdoor suitability does not solve the optical design. Letter depth, stroke width, face transmission, internal finish and viewing distance determine whether the face looks even. A wide optical distribution can help at shallow depths, but the permitted spacing must be proven with the actual face and return geometry.
Glowfy K8 Pro is a 12V, 1.2W module with Philips 2835 LEDs, a 170-degree beam specification and an IP68 product rating. K2 Pro is a smaller 12V, 0.72W option using Philips 2835 LEDs with the same stated beam angle and IP rating. These specifications help create a shortlist; they do not make either model universally best for every outdoor sign.
Use K8 Pro where its higher output and physical size suit the letter and tested layout. Consider K2 Pro for compact or shallow letters where controlled output and a smaller body are advantageous. Test the selected colour temperature through the real face material, since warm white and cool white can change the appearance of print, acrylic and brand colours.
4. Design the power and connections as one outdoor system
Match a 12V module with a suitable 12V constant-voltage supply. Add the connected module watts, calculate current and apply the power-supply manufacturer’s loading and temperature guidance. A larger supply cannot correct undersized cable, an excessive feed length or a poor joint.
Keep mains equipment and serviceable distribution in an appropriate accessible location. Protect every transition between factory wiring and site wiring with components and methods suited to its exposure. Provide strain relief so module leads and seals are not used as mechanical supports.
The Health and Safety Executive advises that electrical equipment must be suitable for the work, supply and environment, and that concerns should be assessed by a competent person. Outdoor and wet conditions need particular care; the article cannot replace the design and verification responsibilities of the installer.
- Confirm module voltage and total connected load before selecting the driver.
- Check cable length, conductor size, voltage drop and maximum modules per feed.
- Use suitable protected connections and preserve required cable-entry orientation.
- Keep mains-side work with a person competent for the installation and regulations.
5. Control water instead of relying on sealant alone
A sign needs a deliberate water-management strategy. Prevent direct entry where the design allows, but also provide drainage and ventilation in accordance with the fabrication and product requirements. Fully sealing a return without considering condensation can trap moisture rather than eliminate it.
Route cables so water cannot run directly into connections or equipment. Avoid upward-facing entries and low points that retain water. Keep modules clear of drainage paths, sharp edges and areas where fixings can damage the body or cable. Do not cover vents, heat-dissipation surfaces or service labels with sealant.
Plan replacement access before fixing the face. A protected connection that cannot be inspected is difficult to maintain after a fault. Keep layout photographs, product references and the driver position with the project record.
6. Test, document and maintain the completed sign
Before production, build a representative sample using the intended depth, face and internal finish. Assess uniformity from the normal viewing distance and verify operating voltage at the module feed under load. A short sample test can identify layout problems, but it does not establish product life or reproduce years of weather exposure.
After installation, inspect the complete sign before closing it. Photograph module positions, joints, drainage, cable entries and the power equipment. Record the measured load and confirm that protection, isolation and electrical tests required for the installation have been completed by the responsible person.
Arrange maintenance appropriate to the location and manufacturer guidance. Investigate water marks, damaged insulation, repeated tripping, corrosion, dark modules or overheating rather than simply replacing the failed part. Isolate unsafe equipment until a competent person has assessed it.
- Exact module and driver models recorded with current datasheets.
- Approved sample layout and illuminated result retained.
- Field joints, cable entries, drainage and driver mounting photographed.
- Operating voltage, connected load and feed arrangement documented.
- Inspection access and maintenance expectations handed to the customer.
Frequently asked questions
Is an IP68 LED module always the best choice for a UK outdoor sign?
No. IP68 can be useful where its declared test conditions match the risk, but the complete sign also needs suitable connections, drainage, cable entries and power equipment. Optical fit, voltage and operating limits still matter.
Can I use Glowfy K8 Pro in a shallow channel letter?
Its wide-beam optics can help, but suitability depends on the actual depth, stroke width, face and spacing. Test a representative letter. K2 Pro may be preferable where a smaller body and lower output give better control.
Does silicone make an LED sign waterproof?
Not by itself. Unplanned sealing can trap condensation, block drainage or impair cooling. Use suitable rated components and follow the product and fabrication instructions for entries, joints, drainage and ventilation.
Does Glowfy deliver outdoor sign modules across the UK?
Yes. Glowfy supplies professional customers across the United Kingdom from Birmingham-held stock. Check live availability and delivery information when ordering.
