The short answer
Glowfy lists Philips 2835 LEDs in its GL K2 PRO and GL K8 PRO 12V sign modules. The 2835 designation describes an LED package format; it is not a universal lumen, lifetime or colour-quality rating. Compare the exact module’s tested output, colour consistency, optical distribution, sealing and warranty, then validate a sample behind the real sign face.
What does 2835 mean?
The familiar 2835 designation refers to a surface-mounted LED package format of roughly 2.8 by 3.5mm. Manufacturers offer many different parts in this footprint. A number stamped into a product description therefore cannot tell you the chip’s exact flux bin, colour bin, drive current or thermal performance.
The manufacturer’s part number and current datasheet matter. Lumileds publishes several distinct LUXEON 2835 families with different specified applications and performance. A general Lumileds datasheet illustrates how LED characteristics are specified; it should not be substituted for an unverified part number inside a completed sign module.
Where a specified LED chip helps
A traceable component specification gives a professional buyer a better starting point for checking colour consistency, flux at a stated current, operating temperature and change over time. That is valuable when several letters or replacement batches must look alike. It does not by itself prove that all finished modules share the same chip bin or measured output.
A good module design must manage heat and drive the LEDs appropriately. Optical lenses and face material then determine the appearance. A quality component in a poorly sealed or overheated housing may perform badly; conversely, module-level photometric evidence is more useful for a sign than chip-level marketing alone.
K2 PRO and K8 PRO: choose by the complete module
At the time of writing, Glowfy lists GL K2 PRO as a 12V, 0.72W, 70lm module and GL K8 PRO as a 12V, 1.2W, 120lm module. Both product pages specify Philips 2835 LEDs, 170° optical distribution and IP68 construction. Each is sold in warm and cool white options; use the current variant page for the exact colour temperature and specifications.
The arithmetic ratios are approximately 97lm/W for K2 PRO and 100lm/W for K8 PRO using the published nominal module figures. These are module-level catalogue ratios, not a verified efficiency measurement for the finished sign. A larger-output module can help in a larger letter, while a smaller module may be easier to space in a compact stroke. Neither automatically produces a better face.
| Published specification | GL K2 PRO | GL K8 PRO |
|---|---|---|
| Input | 12V DC | 12V DC |
| Nominal power | 0.72W per module | 1.2W per module |
| Published output | 70lm per module | 120lm per module |
| Listed chip and optic | Philips 2835; 170° | Philips 2835; 170° |
How to compare modules fairly in a workshop
Use the same letter depth, face acrylic, return colour, supply voltage and camera exposure for every sample. Compare warm with warm or cool with cool. Lay out enough modules to light the narrowest stroke, corner and broadest area; an impressive single-module brightness figure does not reveal these problem areas.
Measure input voltage under full load and total watts, inspect hotspots with the face fitted, and photograph the result at a fixed exposure. Ask for the exact current product datasheet, warranty terms and any relevant compliance documentation. If colour consistency across future batches matters, ask how bins and replacements are handled.
- Check module-level lumens and watts at stated test conditions.
- Check CCT and, where colour rendering matters, the actual CRI and colour-bin data.
- Check lens distribution, recommended depth and spacing using a physical sample.
- Check the sealed assembly, wiring, adhesive or mechanical fixing and service access.
What a Philips chip claim does not establish
The chip name alone does not establish a fixed lifetime, a five-year service life, a universal energy saving, or that Glowfy is manufactured or endorsed by Philips. A product warranty is a separate commercial promise with its own terms. Ask the supplier for relevant documentation if a particular chip identity or bin is a contractual requirement.
The final sign also depends on driver quality, heat, voltage drop, moisture protection and installation workmanship. Specify those as a system rather than choosing the LED solely by its brand badge.
Frequently asked questions
Are all 2835 LEDs the same?
No. 2835 identifies a package format; actual part families and bins differ in flux, colour and operating limits.
Does a Philips chip make a complete sign Philips-branded?
No. Glowfy’s statement concerns the listed component inside Glowfy modules, not ownership or endorsement of the complete module.
Does the K8 always need fewer modules than K2?
No. Module count depends on geometry, stroke width, face transmission, depth and acceptable uniformity. Test a representative sample.
Is the 170° angle produced by the chip?
The module’s stated beam angle describes the optical assembly; lenses and housing affect the finished beam as well as the LED source.
