Can One LED Driver Power Multiple LED Strips? Wiring and Load Planning

One power supply can feed several strip runs, but a large wattage label is only one part of the design. In a shopfront, light box or retail display, the branch layout, cable lengths and connector ratings determine whether all runs illuminate evenly.

The short answer

Multiple compatible constant-voltage strips may share a supply when they require the same output voltage, their combined wattage and current fit within the supply rating, and the branch wiring is correctly sized. Feed separate runs in parallel according to the strip and driver instructions; do not assume a long daisy chain is acceptable.

Start with the same voltage and control method

If three strips are each rated 24V DC, a suitable 24V CV supply can potentially power all three. A 12V run cannot simply be attached to that 24V output. For RGB, tunable-white or individually controlled zones, check the controller channel ratings and wiring diagram as well as the power supply.

A separately dimmed zone may require its own control channel even when it shares a supply. The total power supply rating does not increase the capacity of a smaller dimmer or controller placed between the supply and the strips.

Worked example: three branches on one supply

Suppose each of three 24V runs is 2 metres long at 15W/m. One branch draws 2 Ă— 15 = 30W, so the three together draw 90W. At 24V that is approximately 3.75A total, or about 1.25A per branch. Applying a practical 80% loading target gives 90 Ă· 0.8 = 112.5W, so a suitable supply rated at least 120W could be considered, subject to its actual operating and derating limits.

The 80% target is a planning convention, not a universal mandatory rule. An installer must check the exact supply’s permissible continuous load, temperature derating and output-terminal ratings.

Parallel branches and distribution

For compatible constant-voltage strips, give each independent run the supply’s full rated voltage using parallel feeds from an appropriate distribution point or the driver’s permitted terminals. Maintain polarity consistently. Size the main feed for the combined current; size each branch for its own current and installation method.

Two sets of output terminals on a driver do not necessarily mean two separately fused or independently regulated outputs. Check the manufacturer’s wiring diagram. Do not tie the DC outputs of separate power supplies together unless their manufacturer explicitly permits it.

Why the final strip may be dim

Current through cable and the copper tracks inside a strip causes voltage drop. A supply can have spare watts while the far end of a run still receives too little voltage. The effect becomes more pronounced with long paths, small conductors and high current.

Follow the strip’s stated maximum feed length. Depending on the product, split the run, use additional feed points or feed both ends as the manufacturer permits. Check voltage under load at the feed and far end, and confirm that every added cable and joint suits the environment. Our dedicated voltage-drop guide explains the calculation in detail.

Installation checklist for a multi-run sign

Before closing the sign or display, record the following.

  • Voltage and watts per metre for each strip; length of every branch.
  • Combined power and current, driver rating, derating and controller capacity.
  • Maximum permitted continuous strip length and required feed positions.
  • Cable cross-section, connector current rating, polarity and protected connections.
  • Operating voltage and brightness at the beginning and end of each branch under full load.
  • Access to the driver and distribution point for future inspection and repair.

When should you use more than one supply?

Separate supplies can be sensible when the combined load exceeds a suitable unit, branches are far apart, the project requires separate isolation, or one central feed would create impractical voltage drop. Divide the installation into clearly defined circuits. Do not connect unrelated outputs together as a shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect two 5-metre strips end to end?

Only if the exact strip’s permitted run length and feed instructions allow it. A supply with enough watts does not remove voltage drop along the strip.

Should multiple 24V LED strips be connected in series?

Separate fixed-voltage strip runs are generally fed in parallel to receive their rated 24V. Follow the manufacturer’s specific wiring diagram.

Can one power supply feed two dimming zones?

Often yes if the supply and every controller channel are correctly rated and the control system supports the wiring arrangement.
